GPC Tennis on the Rise?

By Ricky Riley-  Clarkston Managing Editor

We made the big noise in junior college tennis,” said Tennis Coach Nait Omar, of the 2010 season. “This sends a good message to the teams on our schedule that GPC is back at the level they once were. This is big-time. People are going to pay attention.”

However, with a 1-2 record and mother nature literally raining on their parade, the men’s and women’s tennis teams are off to a rocky start this season.

Players like Salif Kante and Ismail Lemtouni leads a deep roster but has not enough to pullout victories against top-rated Emory.

The women’s team, winning two out of five games and playing mostly on the road, are fighting hard for a chance against schools like Emory.

According to the GPC website, “Sadia Mayou, a freshman tennis player from Togo, has been Georgia Perimeter College’s go-to player at No. 2 singles. Mayou out-volleyed Lorne McManigle of Emory University 7-6, 6-2 for GPC’s lone win in seven matches Wednesday [ February 23] as the Jaguars lost on the Eagles’ home courts in Atlanta 8-1.”

Nevertheless, the season is still young, and the Jags are looking to improve along the way.
