Newton Cafe expansion to relocate Science Grotto

Rumors have been flying over the past couple of months that the Newton Campus Café is going to undergo expansion. As it turns out, there are tentative plans to expand the small space, however, there is not a confirmed date.

“The plan includes a grill and fryer to offer hot food items,” said Keith Chapman, Chief of Auxiliary. “Auxiliary services, which by state mandate is self-funded, will pay for the expansion.”

The biggest concern about the expansion comes from SGA Senator Sara Cox. If the café is to be expanded, it will take space from the Science Grotto.

“That could possibly put the Science Grotto out of business due to not having a location,” Cox said. “As a Senator, I have been doing a lot of behind the scenes to ensure the existence of the Science Grotto. However, recent news of this expansion has made this process difficult.”

According to Chapman, this is the reason the expansion is still tentative. “Relocating the Grotto to a larger space would be ideal,” he said.
